The Movement Foundation was established with two core goals:
- Make dance accessible to rangatahi in the Horowhenua region
- Support talented and dedicated dancers access the high-level training opportunities often only afforded to those living in cities
The Horowhenua region faces the 7th highest level of deprivation in New Zealand and the lowest mean household income in the country. These barriers can mean that young people in the community miss out on opportunities to engage with dance, move their bodies, and access valuable training opportunities. The Movement Foundation helps young dancers overcome these barriers and do what they love – dance.
Our support is open to rangatahi all across the region, whether they’re a student at one of the region’s dance schools, or they just love to move.
The Circus Hub Collaboration
In 2025, The Movement Foundation teamed up with The Circus Hub to give 30 dancers from Horowhenua an action-packed 3 hour workshop at Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre in Wellington. The dancers learnt from skilled circus practitioners and tried their hand at a number of circus arts including aerial silks, hand-balancing, trapeze, adagio and more.
This was a fantastic opportunity for the rangatahi to try something new, extend and improve on existing acrobatics skills, and explore future career options available to them. The Movement Foundation in collaboration with The Circus Hub provided this at no cost to the dancers.

We are a newly created foundation in the process of establishing ourselves. We are currently working on establishing projects and securing funds to help keep term fees for regular dance classes as accessible as possible for whānau, and provide opportunities to access dance closer to home, for dancers across the region.
